The polls
closed at 7 p.m. last Tuesday evening on the Society Hill special election
in which two individuals ran for mayor and nine individuals ran for
three seats on Town Council.
For the mayoral position, Valencia Brewington received 127 votes, Kevin
Long received 69 votes, and John Coleman received one. The following
are the Town Council results: Charlotte Chapman Edwards, 82; Denise
Douglas 88; Richard Gainey, 92; Donald Watford, 82; Martin Hans, 26;
Raymond Harris, 25; Cameron Michael, 59; Rachel Tice Peninger, 21; and
Lori Ann Spring, 59.
Because Watford and Edwards received the same number of votes, there
will be a runoff election held on April 1, and there will be another
special election held on July 8th to fill Brewington’s seat on
Town Council.
Filing for the special election in July will begin on May 9.
Brewington will replace former Society Hill Mayor Henry Moree. Douglas
and Gainey will replace two of the three council seats which were resigned
by Ann Breckenridge, Lynn Gaskins and Kelly Wallace.
A Society Hill native, Brewington is currently employed with the Department
of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) in Florence, and has been
there for the last 25 years. She is the former WIC Director and is now
the Regional Director of Community Development for a 10-county region.
She has an Associates in Secretarial Science, a Bachelors in Business
Administration Management, and a Masters in Clinical Counseling. Brewington
is also a licensed professional counselor.
All questions regarding the upcoming runoff or special elections should
