Proofreader, correct thyself

An editorial attempt to encourage Darlington County residents to voice their opinions on the courthouse relocation went horribly awry last week when its author was temporarily unable to make a decision between the words “will” and “can.”

<This editorial refers to the print version of The News & Press.>

An ill-advised and, as it turns out, very poor writing habit is inserting two choices, looking them over, and then removing the unluckier candidate. In this particular instance, the wrong word fell by the wayside.

The sentence which should have read “ If you don’t open your mouth and say something, no one will hear you,” was instead printed as follows: “If you don’t open your mouth and say something, no one will can you.” While being prudent of speech is without question a desirable trait, and one we would all do well to cultivate, nevertheless it may not be enough to save you from the various available methods of being “canned.”

The decision regarding the courthouse is still pending. Despite the unfortunate error in last week’s editorial, we, along with our County Council, continue to welcome our citizens’ opinions and encourage you to share them with us.

Remember, if you don’t open your mouth and say something, no one will (or can) hear you.
