Hometown Pride

As wonderful as it is to see people from our area win recognition for their accomplishments, somehow it seems even more special when such recipients are children. The future leaders of our community aren’t waiting to grow up before going out and making a name for themselves; they’re doing it right now.

One such example is Sarah Isgett of Darlington, a nationally-ranked member of our local equestrian community. Sarah has been ranked in the top 10 in her area of competition, the All Around division, for 2007, and we offer her our congratulations.

As this week’s News and Press is “put to bed,” as the saying goes, the Lady Falcons of Darlington High School are preparing to play for the lower state softball championship. It is great fun to have a dominant team in competition, especially when it is your team, and the Lady Falcons have once again proven themselves to be the cream of the crop this season. Regardless of the outcome of the lower state finals, they are already winners in our book.

Last but certainly not least, race week has finally arrived. Please do your part to support the events at Darlington Raceway this week. The track is an important asset to our area, and who knows? Some of you out there may even see yourselves on national television!

May 10 Voter Registration Deadline Approaches

The State Election Commission wants to remind those not already registered to vote that they must register no later than May 10 in order to participate in the June 10 Republican and Democratic primaries. Voters who have moved to another county must register in their new county prior to the deadline in order to participate in the primaries.

Voters needing to register to vote have the following options:
1. Stopping by their county voter registration office.
2. Downloading the Voter Registration form from the Voter Information section of www.scvotes.org. The form should be printed, completed and mailed to the voter’s county registration office.

Not all county voter registration offices will be open on Saturday, May 10. Check with your local office regarding Saturday hours. All applications postmarked by May 10 will be accepted.

To help ensure the upcoming primaries run as efficiently as possible, those already registered are urged to update their information.

“Having accurate registration information helps ensure a voter’s eligibility to vote in an election,” says Executive Director Marci Andino. “It also reduces the potential for delays in the sign-in process at polling places – and that can have a significant impact on wait time for all voters.”

Voters who are already registered but need to update their registration information have the following options:
1. Calling or stopping by their county voter registration office.
2. Downloading the Voter Registration Update form from www.scvotes.org. The form should be printed, completed and mailed to the voter’s county registration office (not applicable to those who have moved to a new county).
3. Updating the information on the back of their voter registration card and mailing the card to their county voter registration office (not applicable to those who have moved to a new county).

All registered voters should check their voter registration cards to ensure their information is correct. Voters may also check their record by calling or visiting their county voter registration offices.
1. Contact information can be found at ww.scvotes.org/howtoregister
2. Voters may also check their information online at http://www.scvotes.org/your_voter_registration.
