Ronnie Suggs
HARTSVILLE- Charles ““Ronnie”” Ronald Suggs, age 64, died Saturday, January 26, 2008. Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, January 28 at Temple Free Will Baptist Church. Interment followed in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Ronnie was born in Darlington County, son of the late Charlie and Mary Whittle Suggs. He served his country with the United States Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Ronnie was employed by Sonoco Paper Products. He was an avid hunter, but enjoyed most his grandchildren, attending their sporting events to cheer them on. He was a wonderful and loved husband, father and papa. He was of the Protestant faith.
Surviving are his wife, Janice Brown Suggs of Hartsville; two daughters, Shannon (Glen) Tyndall and their children Matt, Makayla and Parker Tyndall of Hartsville, and Stacie Suggs, her daughter, Kadance Suggs and fiance’, Daniel Driggers of McBee; two sisters, Sylvia Chandler and Mollie Johnson; two brothers, Steve Suggs and Charlie Boykin; and nieces and nephews.
Ronnie was preceded in death by a sister, Larue Odom, and a brother, Franklin Suggs.

Joe Charles Jones Sr.
DARLINGTON- Joe Jones, 61, of the Mechanicsville Community of Darlington County died Saturday, January 26, 2007.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 2 p.m. in the Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed at Grove Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Jones was born in Darlington County. He was the son of the late Magaline Warren Jones. Mr. Jones was an associate of Darlington Veneer for many years until his illness. He worked hard all his life. He was a self-proclaimed farmer and he loved his garden and his animals. He adored his grandchildren, Heather, Chelsea, Kristen, Chase, and Megan.
Mr. Jones is preceded in death by his brother, Reverend Wilson Gandy.
Mr. Jones is survived by his wife of 43 years, Rosa Lee Steptoe Jones; His son, Joe C. Jones Jr. his wife Cindi; his daughter, Brenda Godbehere and her husband Woody, all of Darlington; his sister, Jane Griffitts and her husband Gerald.
The family received friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Monday, January 28, 2208 at the funeral home.

Larry Ward
LAMAR- Larry Ward, age 62, died Thursday, January 24, 2007 at his residence. Funeral services were held at 2:00 on Saturday, January 26 in Oates Baptist Church, and burial followed in Newman Swamp Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home, Lamar. The family received friends one hour prior to the service in the church.
Mr. Ward was born in Darlington County, son of the late Boyd C. Ward and Margie Blackwell Ward Williams. He was the owner and operator of Country Boy Seafood in Hartsville, and enjoyed cooking and selling produce. Larry was a member of Oates Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Coleen King Ward; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Richie Walters of Pine Ridge, Sandra and Steve Brown, Fran Harrington, all of Lamar; two sons, Larry Glasscock, Jr., Timmy Glasscock, both of Lamar; six beautiful grandchildren; two sisters, Jackie W. Floyd of Darlington, Renee Ward of Isle of Palms; a step-mother, Joyce G. Ward of Spartanburg; and a special aunt, Myrtle Blackwell of Darlington.

William Harvey Bryant
SOCIETY HILL- William Harvey Bryant, 84, of Society Hill died Tuesday, January 22, 2008.
Funeral services were held on Friday, January 25, 2008 at 2 p.m. in the Welch Neck Baptist Church, conducted by the Reverend Marvin Lynch and conducted by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Bryant was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Arthur Dowell and Jessie McInville Bryant. He was a farmer all his life until retiring due to disabilities. Mr. Bryant was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel L. Bryant, his father, Arthur Dowell Bryant, his mother, Jessie M. Bryant, three brothers, David Harden Bryant, Arthur Howard Bryant, and Coleman Bryant, and one niece, Betty Bryant Josey.
Survivors include six sons, Wayne Bryant of Cheraw, Michael (Patsy) Bryant and Ronald Jefferson “Jeff” (Amy) Bryant, both of Society Hill, Steve Bryant and Tony Harvey Bryant, both of Hartsville, and William Franklin “Tom” (Brenda) Bryant of Wallace; one daughter, Bonnie (Henry) Griggs of Cheraw; nine grandchildren, Lisa Linton, Wayne Watford, Wesley Bryant, Stephen Bryant, Whitney Bryant, Chad Bryant, Crystal Bryant, Drew Stokes, and Sherrie Pratt; three great grandchildren, Shea Linton, Gavin Watford, and India Watford; four nephews, William David “Bill” Bryant, Ronald Carroll Bryant, Johnny Dowell Bryant, and Samuel Howard Bryant; two nieces, Pamela Margaret Bryant, and Linda Diane Bryant.

Ronnie Levern Bacote
DARLINGTON- Funeral services for Mr. Ronnie Levern Bacote of Darlington were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2008, in Christ Temple Holiness Church. District Elder Wesley Belin, pastor. Burial followed in Florence National Cemetery directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc., Darlington.
Mr. Bacote died Sunday, Jan. 20 in the VA hospital in Columbia after an illness. He was born in Darlington, a son of Vivian Bacote and the late Seeroy Evans Sr.
He was a graduate of Mayo High School, class of 1968, and a member of St. Matthews No. 2 Church.
He served his country in the U.S. Army, serving two tours in Vietnam, and was honorably discharged. He continued his education at Florence-Darlington Technical College.
He was employed at Fibers Industries and other various jobs until he became disabled.
Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Vivian Bacote Johnson of the home; his wife, Lillie Bell Bacote; a son, Ronnie Bacote Jr.; a daughter, Ms. Cellistine Brown; and a stepdaughter, Ms. Renese Brown, all of Darlington; three sisters, Ms. Barbara (Henry) Davis and Ms. Asalee Buey, both of Darlington, and Ms. Virginia Bacote of New York; two brothers, Levern Curtis and Seeroy Evans, both of Darlington; six grandchildren, Aquaris, Shakaun, Craig, KaDeysha, Jermeah and Nakia; two aunts, Ms. Georgianna Richardson of Darlington and Mrs. Avernell Bacote of New Jersey; an uncle, Villo (Lula) Bacote of New Jersey; a grandaunt, Mrs. Rosa Bell Lighty of Darlington; two special cousins, Jimmy Bacote and Larry Bacote, both of New Jersey; six sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; nieces, nephews, and a host of loving relatives and friends.
A brother, Leroy Bacote, preceded him in death.
The family is receiving friends at the residence, 530 Oleander Drive, Darlington.
Elizabeth Everett
Elizabeth Stackhouse Everett, age 98 and widow of Thomas Calvin Everett, II, died December 21, 2007 at the Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee. Mrs. Everett will be buried beside her husband in North Carolina. A memorial service was held in the chapel of The Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee at 2:00 on Saturday, January 26, 2008.
She was born May 21, 1909, daughter of the late George Bennett and Eva Bryant Stackhouse, and was a graduate of the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Everett had retired from teaching and the Department of Welfare. She was of the Methodist faith.
Surviving are her daughter, Mary E. Mozingo of Darlington; her son, Thomas C.(Eranda) Everett, III of Florence; four grandchildren, Mark Everett Mozingo, Sebrell Everett (Damon) Smith, Chappell Everett (Daniel) Hughes and Mary Glenn Everett; one great-grandchild, McAlister Smith; one sister, Ann Rogers of Pawleys Island; two brothers, James Stackhouse of Mullins and John W. Stackhouse of Goldsboro.
Mrs. Everett was preceded in death by a brother, George Bennett Stackhouse, and her grandson, James P. Mozingo, V.

Virginia Weatherford
DARLINGTON- Virginia Rebecca Stokes Weatherford, age 76, widow of Allen Clifton Weatherford, died Sunday, January 20, 2008. Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 23, at 2:00 in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home and burial followed in Darlington Memory Gardens.
Born in Darlington in 1931, Virginia was a daughter of the late Foster W. Stokes and Edith Jernigan Stokes Anderson. She was a devoted and loving housewife. Mrs. Weatherford attended Temple Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving are Allen W. Weatherford, Charles B. Weatherford (Peggy), Michael C. Weatherford (Maria), David A. Weatherford (Tina), all of Darlington, three daughters; Virginia Ann Adams of Darlington, Lisa Marie Gainey (Robert) of Jacksonville, FL, Debra Lynn Milliken of Darlington; fifteen grandchildren; a number of great grandchildren; a brother, George Henry Stokes of Darlington; a sister, Carrie S. Isgett of Florence; special friends, Ann and Lee Adams and Frances Gainey.
She was preceded in death by her step-father, Jody Anderson.

Lonnie Lemuel Sansbury
FLORENCE- Lonnie Lemuel Sansbury, 73, of Florence died Sunday, January 20, 2008.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 2 p.m. in the Trinity United Methodist Church, conducted by the Reverend Joe Blackwelder and directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington. Burial followed in the Lake Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Sansbury was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Thomas Jefferson and Arah Griggs Sansbury. He was a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Florence. Mr. Sansbury was known throughout the automotive industry having worked for Cox Motors, Hoover Chrysler, and most recently Raceway Automotive in Hartsville. He was a NASCAR fan. Mr. Sansbury was predeceased by one sister, Belle Branham.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie M. Sansbury of the home; two sons, Dr. Lonnie L. Pete Sansbury Jr. of Asheville, NC and Thomas Jefferson Jeff Sansbury of Darlington; one stepson, Robert Bruce Lynch of Darlington; two stepdaughters, Susan L. (Frank) Holmes of Florence, Peggy Howle of Jackson, LA; two twin brothers, Ferrel Sansbury of Santee and Jerrel Sansbury of Darlington; four sisters, Catherine (Fred) Cross of Darlington, Margaret (Hugh) Newsome of Hartsville, Marilyn Sansbury and Carolyn Humphries, both of Florence; and two grandchildren, John and Josh Sansbury.

Daisy Etheridge Denmark
DARLINGTON- Funeral services for Mrs. Daisy Etheridge Denmark of Darlington were conducted at noon Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church and the Rev. Emory P. Boyd Sr., pastor, officiated with services. Interment followed in Florence National Cemetery directed by Jordan Funeral Home of Darlington.
Mrs. Denmark entered into eternal rest after living a faithful and wonderful life Friday, Jan. 18. She was born in Darlington County on Dec. 20, 1927. She was the daughter of the late Martin and Georgia Ketter Etheridge.
Mrs. Denmark attended Butler High School and graduated in 1944. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from Morris College in Sumter and a Master of Arts from New York University, New York. She did further studies in the doctoral program at New York University, New York. She taught in the public schools of South Carolina and retired from West Hartsville Elementary School after many years of devoted service.
Daisy, as she was affectionately called, was married to Robert Bubba Denmark in 1952 and to this union a loving son, Oyama Roberto, was born. Oyama preceded her in death.
Mrs. Denmark was a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church for many years and served faithfully in many capacities. She worked in the Sunday School serving as a Sunday school teacher and assistant Sunday School superintendent. She was also a member of the Missionary Society and Sorosis Guild.
Those left to cherish her sweet memories are her devoted husband, Robert Denmark of the home; an uncle, Houston (Helen) Ketter of Queens, NY; four granddaughters, Felecia, Alexis, Qytila and Jessica; two sisters-in-law, Grace Denmark Swinney of Newark, NJ, and Ervina Denmark of Orange, NJ; a special nephew, Dr. Robert (Annie) Haynes of Florence; two special cousins, Dorothy (Donald) Thomas of Myrtle Beach and Reggie (Teresa) Ketter of Norfolk, VA; four great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Jourmany Lighty Jr.
HARTSVILLE- Funeral services for Jourmany Lighty Jr. were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, at Sandy Bluff United Methodist Church. The burial followed at Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. The Reverend Raymond Cook, Jr., the pastor of Sandy Bluff, officiated the services.
Mr. Lighty was born July 22, 1947, in Lee County, South Carolina, a son of Jourmany and Ruby Davis Lighty Malloy. He attended the public schools in Lee and Darlington counties.
On May 20, 1977, he was joined in holy matrimony to Ann B. Lighty who he loved and adored. This union was full of love and was blessed with two children.
Jourmany served his country honorably during the Vietnam Conflict. He worked at various jobs in and around Hartsville. He was employed for a while at Sonoco Products Company, The City of Hartsville and Dawkins Concrete. He and his brothers, Felton and the late Chapel, worked together at P.I. Nemiroff Corporation.
During his youth he joined Sandy Bluff United Methodist Church. He later became president of the United Methodist Men and sang with the Men’s Choir.
Mr. Lighty was a loving and gentle father to his children whose work ethic and guidance were characteristics that he cherished. He would help anyone in the community in any way he could. His foresight and wisdom will never be forgotten by family and friends.
Surviving to cherish the memory and continue the legacy of Jourmany Lighty Jr. include his loving wife, Ann B. Lighty of Hartsville; his daughters, Kimberly Lighty and Rosa (Leon) Gregg, both of Hartsville; his sons, Jourmany Jermaine (Jessica Brown) Lighty III of Charlotte, NC, and Antonio Lighty of New Jersey; his brothers, Felton (Ernestine) Lighty of Hartsville, Dr. Charles (Lucille) Lighty of Florence, Reverend Johnny (Montez) Mitchell of Greenville and Jerry (Jennie) Screen of Columbia; his sisters-in-law, Celestine Littles and Virginia Lighty, both of Hartsville; two brothers-in-law, Eugene (Rose) Littles and Carnell Littles, both of Hartsville; a special niece, Sandra (Aaron) Smith of Rock Hill; seven grandchildren; and many other relatives and very dear friends.

Ann Watford
LAMAR- Frances Ann Parnell Watford, age 63, died Tuesday, January 22, 2008. Funeral services were held in the Lamar chapel of Belk Funeral at 2:00 on Friday, January 25 and burial followed in Lamar Cemetery.
Born in 1944 in Lee County, Ann was a daughter of the late Gettice and Frances Huggins Parnell. She had retired from G.E. and has always enjoyed serving and helping other people and being a loving mother to her children. She was a member of Christian Pathways.
Surviving are her husband, Fred Watford; three sons, Fred (Tracy) Watford, Jr. of Lamar, Brian (Christina) Watford of McBee, Rod (April) Watford of Lamar; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Richard (Jeanette) Parnell of Bishopville, Hamer (Ann) Parnell of Lamar; three sisters, Wilma Saverance of Bishopville, Jackie (Roy) Powell of Sumter, Linda (Shot) Windham of Lamar; and special friends, Cindy Windham and Linda Fountain.
She was preceded in death by a son, Todd Anthony Watford, and a sister, Carolyn Rabon.

Julius Wilson

Mrs. Payne, widow of J. C. Stevens and Bill Payne, died Wednesday, January 23, 2008. Born in Hartsville, SC, she was a daughter of the late John Henry and Nona Caddell Rogers. She was retired from Springs Mills as an instructor. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene and a godly lady who loved her Lord, her family and her church. She was a positive person who put others first and loved life, a caregiver to many, a great cook, and most especially a great prayer partner and prayer warrior.

Gladys Hutchinson
DARLINGTON- Gladys Hill Hutchinson, age 94, died Wednesday, January 23, 2008. Funeral services were held in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home at 2:00 on Friday, January 25, and burial followed in Grove Hill Cemetery. The family received friends one hour prior to the service.
Mrs. Hutchinson was born in Florence County, daughter of the late Jessie and Lula Blackmon Hill. Gladys worked for Darlington Manufacturing and then retired from Bamberg Mills. She was a former member of the Golden Age Club and the Senior Citizens Band. Mrs. Hutchinson was Protestant in faith.
Surviving are a son, G.W. (Belva) Hutchinson of Darlington; two daughters, Pearl (Robert) Dixon of Barnwell, Irene (Billy) Swink of Murrell’s Inlet; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert E. Hutchinson, a son, A.E. Hutchinson, Jr., brothers, Robby, James and Lawson Hutchinson, and a sister, Bonnie Swann.

John Draper
HARTSVILLE- Graveside services for John Ross Draper, 78, were at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, January 13, 2008 at Magnolia Cemetery. Father Karl Roesch officiated. Memorials may be made to Pulmonary Fibrosis, 1332 N. Halsted St., Suite 201, Chicago, IL 60622.
Mr. Draper died Saturday, January 12, 2008. Born in Kalamazoo, MI, he was a son of the late Warren Carroll and Margaret Southfield Draper. He was a graduate of Western Michigan Univeristy, was elected to Kappa Rho Sigma (Honorary Science Fraternity), and served four years in the U. S. Air Force. He spent most of his years in the pulp and paper industry and was employed with Union Bag/Camp and Consolidated Paper Co., and retired from Sonoco Products Co. He finished his career as an industrial consultant for the South Carolina Technical Schools. He was a past member of Rotary and past chairman of the Board of Trustees for Florence-Darlington Technical College.

Mr. Thomas died Friday, January 11, 2008. Born in Lee Co., SC, he was the son of the late Carl Timmons and Fleetwood Dubose Thomas. He was a loyal and active member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church for over 60 years. He attended Lee County Public Schools and Clemson University before serving during WWII in the Pacific for three years. He was the Sheriff of Lee County from 1959 – 1961. After retiring from farming, he established T & T Mobile Homes and Plantation Parks.

HARTSVILLE- Robert Wesley Coker, Sr., 68, husband of Carole Bryant Coker, died Saturday, January 12, 2008.
Born in Hartsville, SC, Mr. Coker was the son of the late James Reaves Coker, Sr. and Annie James Hollis Coker.
Mr. Coker attended The Citadel, graduated from Wingate Junior College and then attended Furman University, and served in the National Guard. He owned and retired from Coker Data Supply. He was a member of Northgate Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.
Surviving in addition to his wife are four children, Bryan Coker Youngblood (Andy), Catherine Hollis Coker, Courtney Leigh Coker, and Robert Wesley Coker, Jr.; one grandson, Andrew Patrick Youngblood; two brothers, James Reaves Coker (Linda) and Samuel Reaves Coker (Kay); three sisters, Anne Coker Garrett (Tobe), Carolyn Coker Moore, and Fran Coker Clark (Steve); and a sister-in-law, Margaret Coker. He was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel Hollis Coker.

Mrs. Powell, widow of J. Floyd Powell, died Thursday, January 10, 2008. Born in Marion County, SC, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Verne and Luna Williamson Williamson. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She graduated from Coker College in 1940 and taught for 35 years in the Hartsville area schools, where she developed the elementary school music program. She was a member of First Baptist Church and previously served as a Sunday School teacher. She was a member of the Hartsville Music Club and Community Concert Association. She served as a hospital volunteer at Byerly Hospital and Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center since WWII, completed over 12,000 volunteer hours of service during her tenure, and also was a past chairman of the Auxiliary.

Ethel Durant
DARLINGTON- Ethel Vaughan Story Durant, age 92, died Sunday, January 13, 2008. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 15, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home officiated by Pastor Frankie Tanner. Interment followed in Darlington Memory Gardens.
Of the eight daughters and one son born to the late Wiley Oscar Vaughan and Nannie Belva Dowling Vaughan, Ethel was the last tree standing. A long time resident of Mont Clare community, Darlington County, she spent the last four years of her life in Medford Place. Ethel was married to the late Joe Story and to the late W. W. Durant. She worked at Dixie Cup until her retirement in 1979 and was a charter member of Mont Clare Baptist Church, Darlington.
Survivors left to treasure her memory are: daughters, Phyllis (Stanley) Leibert and Belva Jones (G.W.) Hutchinson all of Darlington; three grandsons, Russell Jones of Darlington, John (Wanda) Jones of Bogart, GA; Joe (Mindy) Brandon of Albemarle, NC; one granddaughter, Holly (Jimmy) Brandon Thomson of Pineville, NC; two great-granddaughters, Erika Thomson, Sydney Leibert, and Kristin Jones; one great-grandson, Hunter Jones; one stepdaughter, Marie Durant (James) Howle, two stepsons, J. T. Durant of Lydia, and Franklin (Gloria) Durant of Darlington; as well as several step-grandchildren and great grandchildren; also, a number of nieces and nephews.
Ethel was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kara Lynn Brandon, and a stepson, Marvin Durant.

Mrs. Cotton died Thursday, Jan. 3 at her residence after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late John and Martha Wardell Coe. She was the widow of Robert Cotton.
She was a graduate of Mayo High School Class of 1967.
At an early age, she was a member of Cherry Grove Baptist Church. After marriage, she joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she served as a member of the Senior Choir, Usher Board and Missionary Society.
Margaret worked various jobs; lastly she was employed at Nytronics Electronics Inc. of Darlington where she retired.
Survivors include four sons, Kenneth (Mary) Cotton of Philadelphia, Sammie Cotton of Darlington, Danny (Edna) Cotton of Columbus, GA, and Roy (Dianne) Cotton of Hope Mills, NC; a daughter, Virginia Mae Cotton of Darlington; a brother-in-law, Jerome Cotton of Youngstown, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Virginia Patterson of Newport News, VA; 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; special friends, Juanita Scipio and Earline Brown; and close friend of the family and caretaker, Mary Gattison.

She was a graduate of Mayo High School class of 1966 and furthered her education at the University of Iowa. At an early age, she attended Macedonia Baptist Church. She later converted to the Islamic faith.

Pastor Bonner died Saturday, Jan. 5 in Maryland after an illness. She was born in St. Charles County, a daughter of the late Edgar Tarver and Almeta Davis.
She was a graduate of Mayo High School class of 1975 and furthered her education at Columbia International University majoring in Pastoral Ministries.
She was a former employee of Darlington County School District. She was owner and operator of Dress Me Boutique along with two beauty stores in Darlington and Hartsville.
At an early age, she was a member of Palmetto Baptist Church. She was later called to the ministry and was pastor of Your Majesty House Ministries.
She was married twice, first to Roy Singleton and to this union a son, Jason Singleton, was born. Later she made her home in Lexington Park, MD, and married Rodney Bonner.
Survivors include her husband, Rodney Bonner; her son, Jason Singleton; mother-in-law, Othree Bonner; four sisters, Fredericka (Moses) Johnson, Johnnie Mae Williamson, Sherren (Eugene) Davis, Vivian (Robert) Davis of Joliet, Ill.; one brother, Allen (Mary) Bacote, all of Darlington; two sisters-in-law, Charmin (Tracy) Simien and Jerilyn (Kevin) Brown; two brothers-in-law, Melvin (Nicole) Bonner and Henry Bonner; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

James McFarland Jr.
DARLINGTON- Memorial services for Mr. James Bobby (Mac) McFarland Jr. of Darlington, SC via Jamaica Queens, NY were held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008. Services were held locally in the chapel of Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home Inc. of Darlington, SC.
Mr. McFarland departed from this world Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, at his home after a brief illness. He was born on July 4, 1929, the eldest son of the late James Sank McFarland and Louvenia McFarland.
After receiving his formal education from the Darlington County Public Schools Mr. McFarland served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged.
The majority of his adult life was spent in Jamaica Queens, NY where he was self employed. It was there he was united in marriage to Mary Leona Meyers of Elizabeth City, NC. Upon retirement he returned to his roots and birth place of Darlington, SC.
He leaves to cherish fond memories two brothers, Willie McFarland and Simon (Melba) McFarland; six children, Lester (Clara) James of Darlington, SC, Barbara McFarland, Wendy M. Bonner both of Jamaica Queens, NY, James Bobby (GarLinda) McFarland of Grandy, NC, James Clarence McFarland of the United States Army, and Karl Shorty McFarland of Darlington, NC; and finally a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. McFarland was predeceased by three siblings, Albert Squeaky McFarland, Jeanette McFarland Gaitling, and Margaretta McFarland White: and two children Edward McFarland and Karen McFarland.

DARLINGTON- Pearl Fleming Flowers, age 89, died Thursday, January 17, 2008. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Belk Funeral Home officiated by Dr. Ken Sandifer. Interment followed in Grove Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Flowers was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late Monroe Herbert and Cora Elizabeth Cox Fleming. She was married to the late J.Cole Flowers. Mrs. Flowers had retired from Nytronics and was a housewife. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church and member of Ruth Sunday School Class, Young at Heart and the Coggeshall/Warford Missionary Circle.
Surviving are her son, Richard “Dicky” Cole Flowers (Linda) of Darlington; daughters, Betty J. Welch (Cleo) of Darlington and Patricia F. Stewart of West Columbia; grandchildren, William Keith Welch of Darlington, Judy Welch Palmieri of Raleigh, Richard Cole Flowers, Jr. of Darlington, Mark Anthony Flowers of Easley and Jamie Patrick Brown of Columbia; great-grandchildren, Nichole Palmieri, Ryan Palmieri and Ross Flowers; half-brother, M. H. ”Buddy” Fleming (Molly) of Darlington; and half-sisters, Billie Cunningham of Darlington and Peggy Feltman of Alabama.

Mrs. Saleeby, widow of Anton E. Saleeby, died Tuesday, January 15, 2008. Born in Charleston, SC, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Emma Gertrude Meyer Pregnall. She was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, Daughters of the King, Alter Guild, and helped needlepoint the chapel kneelers. She used her talent to needlepoint many items involved in the services at the church she dearly loved. She was a partner in Saleeby’s Men Shop and was retired from Darlington County Schools as a cafeteria assistant manager. She taught Red Cross swimming lessons at Lawton Park for many years and was a member of the Swamp Fox Quilters.

Mrs. Mumford, a daughter of the late Madison and Rosa Brunson Robinson, was born May 17, 1911, in Darlington. She entered into eternal rest Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Leesburg, Va.
Mrs. Mumford was educated in the public schools of Darlington. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Mrs. Rosa Kelly Robinson; a special niece, Romella Hall; other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mrs. Parnell was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late Grover and Vannie Yarborough Windham.
She was married to the late Robert Wilson Parnell. She had retired from the United States Postal Service and was a member of Lamar Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Ron (Mary) Parnell of Lamar and Bob (Barbara) Parnell of Summerville; two sisters, Myrtle Blackwell of Darlington and Isabelle ““Teent”” Norris of Timmonsville; five grandchildren, David Parnell of Lamar, Lisa Allen of Summerville, Sherri (Marion) Hair of N. Roman Dargan
LAMAR- Funeral services for Roman Dargan were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, at Bethany Baptist Church. The burial followed in Plaza Memorial Gardens directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. Reverend Emmanuel Simon, the pastor of Bethany, officiated the services.
Mr. Dargan died Tuesday, Jan. 15, after an illness.
He was born Sept. 6, 1927 in Bishopville, a son of Lottie Laboo. His mother died when he was only 4 and he was raised by his mother’s sister, Rebecca Cooper. He attended the public schools of Lee County.
In 1952, he was married to the former Mamie Lee Mashack and this union lasted 50 years until her death in 2002. They were blessed with five wonderful children.
Mr. Dargan was employed for several years with Golden Leaf Tobacco Co. of Lamar. He later began working for Korn Industries of Sumter. He was employed there for 26 years and was only absent from work one day!
Mr. Dargan was a lifelong member of Bethany Baptist Church where he served for a time as a trustee and later became a deacon of his beloved church.
Bubba, as he was known by many in the community, will be remembered for his love of conversation and his willingness to share. He kept his mule for many years so that he could plow his garden and other peoples’, as well, so that vegetable gardens could be kept in the community. He would often supply his friends and neighbors with produce that he grew in his garden.
Surviving to cherish the loving memory and maintain the legacy of Roman Dargan include his five daughters, Delores (Haskell) Bess, Janelle (Joseph) Wilson and Sandra (Richard) Wilson all of Lamar, Gloria Butler of North Charleston and Dorothy Dubose of Baltimore; his son, Gregory Dargan of Darlington; his sister, Lottie Davis of Brooklyn, NY; four sisters-in-law, Mary (George) Byrd, Mabel McNeil, Camilla Debase and Mae Willis Bradford; a brother-in-law, Luther (Emily) Mashack; a special friend, Elizabeth Joye; 16 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a host of other very close relatives and friends.

LAMAR- Dr. Samuel Kanada Laffoday passed away in Atlanta, GA, January 15, 2008. Dr. Laffoday was born in Lamar, SC, September 13, 1924, the son of Charles William Laffoday and Deborah May Marsh. He served his country during World War II as a sergeant in the U. S. Army and later served his home state of South Carolina as a professor of biological sciences at Presbyterian College and at The College of Charleston. He served the state of Georgia as a professor at The Southern College of Pharmacy and as a founding member of DeKalb Community College in Atlanta, where he served until his retirement. Dr. Laffoday was a teacher, a Mason and a member of The United Methodist Church. Dr. Laffoday is survived by his wife, Joanne Andrews Laffoday, four children, two grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, all who continue to love him. He is preceded in passing by his brother, Charles W. Laffoday; sisters, Elma Lee Laffoday DuBose and Debbie Laffoday McAbee.

Lexie Margaret Stokes Collie
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS- Lexie Margaret Stokes Collie of San Antonio went to be with the Lord on January 8, 2008.
She was born on March 19, 1931 in Darlington, South Carolina to Johnny Alston Stokes, Sr. and Dolly Margaret Pearce Stokes. She attended St. John’s High School in Darlington and was active in cheerleading and basketball. She went to Coker College before transferring to the University of South Carolina. While at USC she met the love of her life Lamar Pitcher Collie, Jr. of Augusta, Georgia, and they were married December 23, 1951. She completed her B.A. in Education at UTSA in 1979. After 11 years and two tours of duty in the Army, they settled in San Antonio, TX where Lamar set up his orthopedic practice with The San Antonio Orthopedic Group, while Lexie set down new roots as a homemaker.
Lexie became very active with Stonecroft Ministries in 1970. She led the first Bible study in the Christian Women’s Club of San Antonio and was a two time Chairman of the local chapter. She was active in the Northeast Independent School District and served as the President of the Northeast Council of PTAs from 1973-74. She was elected to the N.E.I.S.D. Board of Trustees in 1974 and served as the first female President from 1975-77.
Lexie is survived by her husband of 56 years, Dr. Lamar Pitcher Collie, Jr. and her five children: Dr. Lamar P. Collie III, his son Christopher, daughters Mary Margaret and Caitlin, their mother Rebecca A. Collie; Dr. Robert A. Collie, wife Karen, sons Robert and Michael; Bryan D. Collie, wife Carol, daughters Candice, Kristen and Courtney; Claire Collie Mitchell, husband Robert, their children Meredith, Fowler, Lexie and Camille; Bruce S. Collie, wife Holly, their children Devyn, Jordyn, Jensen, Denton, Branson, Cameron, Bergyn, Calyn, Hadyn, Hansen, Daltyn, and Jadyn. Lexie was known to all of them as “Mema”.
“Sister” or “LM,” as her brothers called her, was preceded in death by her beloved older brother, Johnny Jr., and is survived by four younger brothers: Tommy Stokes, wife Gwen, of Darlington, S.C.; Carl “Pete” Stokes, wife Mary Ellen, of Columbia, S.C.; Darryl Stokes, wife Jane, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and Dennis Stokes, wife Deborah, of Columbia, S.C., as well as her nieces and nephews.
Lexie’s life served as a spiritual witness of her faith in Jesus Christ. The testimony of her faith in every aspect of her daily life touched the lives of everyone who met her. Her love of life, rooted in a profound faith in Christ Jesus and His love for each of us, has passed to a new generation and is perhaps her greatest legacy.
The family wishes to thank Vitas Hospice Care and caregivers Gina, Candice, Moxy and Myra for the loving care and respect they provided for Lexie. Tim O’Neal
DARLINGTON- Timothy “Timmy” Stephen O’Neal, age 29, died Friday, January 11, 2008 from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident. Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, January 13 in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home. Interment followed in Grove Hill Cemetery.
Timmy was born in Florence County, son of Steve and Joanne Rogers O’Neal. He was an electrician with JPT Imaging. He was a NASCAR fan, raced remote control cars and loved fishing with his son. Timmy attended Lamb’s Chapel and Hartsville Community Fellowship.
Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Lindsay Stone O’Neal; his son, William O’Neal, all of Darlington; sister, Aimee (Brad) Knight of Darlington; brother Matthew (Danielle) O’Neal of Florence; his paternal grandmother, Frances O’Neal Edwards of Hartsville; and many aunts, uncles, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Will and Margaret Rogers and Carol S. O’Neal.

Ruth White Davis
COLUMBIA- Mrs. Ruth White Davis, age 88, died Saturday, January 12, 2008 in a Columbia hospital. Graveside funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 14 at Pine Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Regi Thackston and directed by Belk Funeral Home. The family received friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.
Mrs. Davis was born in Darlington County, November 17, 1919, daughter of the late Robert and Annie Hatchell White. She was a devoted wife and loving mother. Mrs. Davis was a longtime member of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church in Columbia.
Surviving are her husband, C. B. Davis, Sr; children, Denise Thackston and her husband, Munro, son, C. Bruce Davis, Jr. and his wife, Lisa, all of Columbia; grandchildren, Rene’ Hannus and husband, Rob, Don Gaw, III and his wife Michelle, Caleb Davis and Jamie Davis; three great-grandchildren; and her brother, Robert White, Jr. of Darlington.
Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by siblings William White, Mack White, Lillie White Ham, Valerie White Register and Lena Mae White Gaskins.

Ellie Tyner
DARLINGTON- Ellie D. Tyner, Jr., age 80, died Saturday, January 12, 2008 at the Hospice House. Funeral services were held Monday, at 2:00 p.m. at Pine Grove United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Tyner was born in Darlington County, son of the late Ellie D. Tyner, Sr. and Bertha Jeffords Tyner. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and was employed by Dixie Paper Products until his illness. Mr. Tyner enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of the DAV and of Pine Grove United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Flora Kay Campbell Tyner; his daughter, Debra “Debbie” Michell; his grandson, David “Scot” Waggoner, all of Florence; brother, James (Rachel) Tyner of Darlington; and two sisters, Joyce Arnold of Darlington and Shirley (Bud) Watford of Lamar.
Mr. Tyner was preceded in death by a brother, Gene Tyner.

Jamie Ethel Dixon
SOCIETY HILL- Jamie Ethel White Dixon, 88, of Society Hill died January 6, 2008.
Mrs. Dixon was born in Gaffney, SC. She was the daughter of the late Junius and Emily Gardner White. She attended Limestone College and graduated from the University of South Carolina. She taught school in the Chesterfield County School District for 36 years prior to her retirement. She was a devoted member of Welsh Neck Baptist Church where she received the “Faithful Servant Award” for her years of service and devotion. She taught the Fidelis Sunday School Class and was responsible for nicknaming her class “Heaven Bound,” saying it was the last Sunday School Class you would attend before going to heaven! Mrs. Dixon was a member of the church choir and was very active in many other aspects of church work to include Vacation Bible School, the Welsh Neck Ramblers, the Sue Wilson Circle, and the bereavement committee where she was affectingly known as the “Chicken Lady”. She enjoyed reading her Bible and writing poetry
Surviving are her husband, Wiley Thomas Dixon of Society Hill; daughter, Nellie (Otis) Lawhon of Darlington; two grandsons, Thomas Luther Lawhon and Bryant Edward Lawhon; adopted grandson, Joseph Cope; several nieces and nephews and one special niece, Emily (Robert) Lorick of Columbia; a special friend, Minnie L. Cope, whom she referred to as her sister; and her special caregivers, Ella and Dot Joyner, Mary Moses, and Betty Swann.
She was predeceased by her siblings, Bertha Lee White, Pearl Mae White, Inez White, Augustus White, Edward Arron White, Junie White, Nell O’Bee White, Myrtle Marie White, Mattie Willie White, Lloyd T. White, Baby Boy White.

Elias Joe, Jr.
HARTSVILLE- Funeral services for Elias Joe, Jr. were held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at the Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel. Burial followed in the St. John UMC Cemetery in the Oates Community, directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. Reverend A.B. Hooker, the paster of St. John, officiated the services.
Elias Joe, Jr. was born September 30, 1942 in Darlington County, South Carolina, a son of the late Elias and Rolenia Joe, Sr. He was educated in the public schools of Darlington County. He was raised by his aunt, Juanita Marcus Wingate, after both his parents died while Elias was still a child. His early childhood was spent in the farming community of Lydia in Darlington County. He, along with the Wingate family, moved to Hartsville in the early 1960s as the need for farm labor subsided. Elias was always an independent person with a willingness to work in effort to take care of his own needs.
He was employed in several capacities at many locations in the Hartsville community before he became employed at the Flax Mill in Darlington, where he was a machine operator. During his tenure on that job he suffered a disabling accident that continued to keep him officially unemployed for the rest of his life. Even though he was completely disabled, he enrolled in an auctioneer's school in Kansas City, Missouri and became proficient as an auctioneer. He really enjoyed his profession and mastered it for the past several years as he "performed" efficiently at the So-Lina Auction Market, Inc.
Survivors include one son, Terrell Butts and one daughter, Verlena Lynette (Donovan) Braxton both of Forestville, MD; six brothers, James Joe of Hartsville, SC, Cleveland (Fannie) Joe and Francis (Maria) Joe, both of New York, NY, McKiver Joe and Robert Lee Joe, both of Pompano Beach FL, and Johnny Joe of Charleston, SC; one aunt, Mamie Jeffery of Darlington, SC; and many relatives and very dear friends.

Grover Graham
DARLINGTON- Grover H. Graham, age 73, died Thursday, January 9, 2008. Funeral services were held in Mechanicsville Baptist Church at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, January 11, 2008. Burial followed in Florence National Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Graham was born in Horry County, son of the late Gurley and Lola Ray Graham. He served his country in the US Army and then worked as a wrecker driver. Grover was a member of Mechanicsville Baptist Church.

Robert W. Shirley
HARTSVILLE- Robert W. Shirley of Hartsville, SC, died in Charlotte, NC on January 10, 2008. Born in Lee County, SC to David Lee and Lannie Fields Shirley, he was the widower of Laura Sumner Shirley. He was also pre-deceased by his brothers, Tom and Yan; sister, Gwendolyn; stepmother, Vara Newsome Shirley. He is survived by his sons, Robert W. (Susan) Shirley of Charlotte, NC, E. Lee Shirley of Redlands, CA; four step-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
He was a long-time resident of Hartsville and was active in his church and youth baseball.
A proud member of “The Greatest Generation”, he served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II in the Philippines as his unit prepared to invade Japan.
After his retirement from Sonoco Products Co., he began a “second career” announcing horse shows in the Pee Dee area. He took up golf in his mid-fifties and played into his early nineties, shooting his age on more than one occasion.
Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church Chapel on January 12, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. The Rev Ryan Goodroe officiated and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home served the family. Burial took place in the church cemetery and the family received friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to your favorite charity in Mr. Shirley’s memory.
The professionalism of the staff at White Oak Manor in Charlotte is greatly appreciated. Their care and compassion for Mr. Shirley, especially during his last days, was a testament to their being angels of mercy!

Georgia Bronson
HARTSVILLE-- Mrs. Georgia Mae Bronson died on Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, after a sudden illness.
Mrs. Brunson was born July 25, 1944, in the Lynchburg community of Lee County, a daughter of the late George McDuffie and Lucille Edmond-Fisher. She was educated in the public schools of Lee County, graduating from Mt. Pleasant High School. After graduation, she moved to Jersey City, NJ, where she was employed in several different capacities for more than 20 years.
She then returned to her native South Carolina and lived in the Lamar community. She then relocated to Hartsville, where she has been living for the past two years.
In support of children, she was a member of the Lamar High School Band Booster Club. She was also a staunch supporter of the Lamar High Silver Fox football team, and her son, who was one of the players.
Mrs. Bronson was a foster mother for more than 18 years. One of her special talents was her interest and her ability to relate to children of all ages while preparing them for life. She was employed with the Grooms Center Daycare in Lamar for a number of years. Mrs. Bronson was a talented cook and enjoyed preparing meals for the enjoyment of her children and others.
She was raised in a Christian family and continued to serve her Lord and Master with continuous and faithful service at the Mt. Pleasant AME church. She was a member of the adult choir, the usher board and many other modes of service to her church.
Survivors include a special friend, Ruben Johnson of the home; one daughter, Schlanda L. Bronson of Hartsville; three sons, Dwayne A. Bronson, Shone (Amy) Bronson both of Hartsville, and Donnie (Sonya) Edmond of Annapolis MD.; one brother, James (Catherine) Edmond of Bethune; three sisters, Lila Edmond of Lynchburg, Betty (Bennie) Price of Lamar and Bertha Dizzley of Bishopville.
She also had four granddaughters and five grandsons; two special nieces, Demetris and her daughter, Zaria Hickmon of the home; and a host of nieces and nephews and other very close relatives and friends.

Robert Lee Grooms
LAMAR- Funeral services for Robert Lee Grooms Sr. of 214 West Pearl Street were held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at Bethany Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Plaza Memorial Gardens directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Lamar. Reverend Emanuel Simon, the pastor of Bethany Baptist Church, officiated with services.
Mr. Grooms was born Aug. 1, 1933 in Lamar, SC, a son of the late Louis and Lillie Braxton Grooms. He was educated in the public schools of Darlington County and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1951. He later graduated from Benedict College in Columbia with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. He continued his pursuit of excellence as he received his Master's degree at Fisk University. He later matriculated at the University of South Carolina where he received a Six Year Advance Certificate.
On July 28, 1956, Robert was married to the former Ola Mae Toney and this union continued for 51 years. They are the proud parents of two children.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict for two years as a communications specialist and was honorably discharged in 1958.
Mr. Grooms was employed with the Darlington County School District for 32 years and retired in 1988. While working in the school district he was first a classroom teacher. He then served as principal of Spaulding Elementary School, Spaulding Middle School and Spaulding High School. Robert loved his work as an educator, but was equally interested in the progress of his community. He served as a member of the Lamar town council, was Mayor Pro Tem and was later elected mayor of Lamar where he served 12 years.
He was a lifetime member of Bethany Baptist Church where he demonstrated his Christian teachings through his participation and involvement in many aspects of church growth. He became superintendent of the Sunday School at the age of fourteen and served for many years. He was also past chair of the Deacon and Trustee boards.
Mr. Grooms was a member of the David Temple Masonic Lodge #45 of Lamar as well as the Ashland Consistory #246. He was also a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Alpha Beta Beta Chapter of Hartsville.
He was a member of the Darlington County Task Force for Progress, the Darlington County Council on Aging, the Darlington County 20/20 Organization, the Darlington County Community Action Agency, the Darlington County Development Board, the Darlington County Water and Sewer Authority, the South Carolina Council of Black Mayors, the South Carolina Association of Special Purpose Districts, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Training Council, the National Housing and Urban Development Regional Advisory Council and the Community Development of the Atlanta Regional Office.
Survivors in addition to his loving wife, Ola Mae Toney Grooms of Lamar, include: a daughter, Angela A. Grooms of Lamar; a son, Robert L. (LaKindra) Grooms Jr. of Algonquin, Ill.; a grandson, Riley Grooms; a granddaughter, Sydney Grooms; three sisters, Betty Mayo and Bonnie (Lunsford) Evans, both of Springfield Gardens, NY, and Mae Frances (Whiteford) Hawkins of Florence; two brothers, Louis (Rozena) Grooms and Eddie Ray (Girlean) Grooms, both of Hartsville; his uncle, Emmett Bess; four aunts, Margaret Braxton-Floyd, Beatrice B. Mrs. Grant, widow of Sameul E. Stewart and John G. Grant, died Sunday, December 30, 2007, at Carolina Hospital Systems in Florence, SC. Born in Lee Co., SC, she was a daughter of the late John Ervin and Anna Watkins Polson. She was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church.
She had been a resident of the Honorage Nursing Home for several years. Most of her life was spent as a resident of Hartsville until going into nursing home care in Florence. She retired from Sonoco Products Company, and she attended Lakeview Baptist Church while living in Hartsville.
Mrs. Grant did not have children of her own, but she is survived by her deceased husband, John Grant's, three children and by many nieces and nephews and their families who will cherish her memory and fondly remember her wonderful cooking, her thoughtfulness, and especially her love. She was preceded in death by her brothers, John Polson, Jr., Mason Polson; sisters, Tiny Fields, Edie Bell Polson, Sarah Nicholson, Mazza Lee (Mac) Lane, Tressie Hughey, and Annie Campbell.

Lonnie Warsaw
DARLINGTON- Lonnie Warsaw, 68, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
Lonnie, also known as Hazel, was born Oct. 19, 1939, in Darlington to the late Rev. Hazel Warsaw Sr. and Mrs. Margaret Oliver Warsaw.
He was a 1958 graduate of Mayo High School and attended Morgan State College in Baltimore, Md.
Lonnie had a very successful career in New York working for the international union as well the local union of the United Food Commercial Workers, or UFCW. Upon retiring in Oct. 2001, he was vice president of local 888. After retirement, Lonnie and Ms. Lottie Cole started their own union, United Federation of Security Guards, or UFSC, Local 1019, where he served as president.
Lonnie was married twice, first to Virginia Dowling Kinder, and then to Victoria Powers Warsaw, and is additionally survived by five children, Leland (Gwendolyn) Warsaw, Deanna Warsaw, Monica (Jerry) Warsaw-Shelton, Melanie (Michael) Joiner and Jasmine Warsaw; seven siblings, Mattie Lee Evans, Mary Louise (Alphonso) Capers, Henry (Maureen) Warsaw, Frederick (Janette) Warsaw, Marjorie (James) Wingate, Betty Jean Warsaw and Ervin Joel (Nancy) Warsaw; four grandchildren; his dear friends Shirley Shears, James Cooper and Wadel Currie; and other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.
A memorial service honoring the life of Lonnie Warsaw was held at 1 p.m. Monday, December 31, 2007 at Bethel AME Church. Visitation at the church was held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and other times at the residence, 136 Kirven St.

Mr. DeWitt was born in Darlington County, son of the late Winfield Schley DeWitt Sr. and Marie Odom DeWitt. A lifelong resident of Darlington, he was educated in its public schools and worked for the American Can/James River industry for 37 years until his retirement in 1994.
He served in the South Carolina National Guard for 29 years with the Company C "Medical" 163 D Support Battalion. Mr. DeWitt was an avid gardener and dedicated fisherman. However, his proudest avocation was being a grandfather to his beloved grandsons, Steven and Nicholas. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Susan Fogle DeWitt; son and daughter-in-law, Charles Allison ("Chuck") DeWitt Jr. and Mary Ellen Folk DeWitt; grandsons, Steven Norris and Nicholas DeWitt, all of Darlington; sister-in-law, Elizabeth ("Tootsie") Rabb DeWitt Galloway, her husband Raymond; and his beloved golden retriever, Sims.

Mrs. Watford was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late Charlie Ingram Alexander and Ida Eula Jeffords Alexander. She was married to the late Howard Watford and was a housewife. Mrs. Watford was a devoted mother and grandmother, who loved the Lord. She was a member of Lamar Pentecostal Holiness Church and attended Christian Pathway.
Surviving are three sons: Fred (Ann) Watford, Thomas (Cathy) Watford and Melvin (Lynn) Watford, all of Lamar; a daughter, Dianne (Kenneth) Amerson, also of Lamar; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; also, special friends, Ron and Donna Causey.

PATRICK- Jerry Lynn Byrd, Sr., age 61, died Thursday, December 27, 2007 in a Florence hospital. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, December 31 at Mechanicsville Baptist Church directed by Belk Funeral Home. Interment followed in Florence National Cemetery with full military honors.
Mr. Byrd was born in Dillon County, son of the late Frank Ellebe Byrd and Nettie Vann Byrd. He served his country with the United States Navy and had retired after more than twenty years as a submarine technician. Mr. Byrd enjoyed fishing . He was a member of Mechanicsville Baptist Church.

DARLINGTON- Laverne “June Bug” Pope, Jr., 64, of Darlington died Friday, December 28, 2007.

Mr. Pope was born in Darlington, a son of the late Laverne Lewis and Lila Mae Jones Pope. He graduated from St. John’s High School in 1962. Mr. Pope was an avid reader, loved to work crossword puzzles and loved music. He is predeceased by a sister, Janice Odom, and a brother, Jake Pope.

DARLINGTON- Elizabeth Stackhouse Everett, age 98 and widow of Thomas Calvin Everett, II, died December 21, 2007 at the Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee. Mrs. Everett was buried beside her husband in North Carolina.
She was born May 21, 1909, daughter of the late George Bennett and Eva Bryant Stackhouse and was a graduate of the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Everett had retired from teaching and the Department of Welfare. She was of the Methodist faith.
Surviving are her daughter, Mary E. Mozingo of Darlington; her son, Thomas C.(Eranda) Everett, III of Florence; four grandchildren, Mark Everett Mozingo, Sebrell Everett (Damon) Smith, Chappell Everett (Daniel) Hughes and Mary Glenn Everett; one great-grandchild, McAlister Smith; one sister, Ann Rogers of Pawleys Island; two brothers, James Stackhouse of Mullins and John W. Born in 1941 in Florence County, Bonnie was the daughter of the late Lee F. and Margie Dawkins Benton. She had retired from Carolina Bank and Trust after 35 years of service. Mrs. Windham worked closely with Friends of the Lamar Library and the Lamar Downtown Revitalization Project. She was a member of Christian Pathways Church.

HARTSVILLE- Funeral services for Marion Clyde Wallace, 85, were held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, December 28, 2007 at Swift Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Mr. Wallace, widower of Elma Stokes Wallace, died Tuesday, December 25, 2007. Born in Union Co., NC, he was a son of the late Samuel and Dora Belk Wallace. He was a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church and the T. J. Lewis Sunday School class. He was owner and operator of M. C. Wallace Grocery for 30 years.

DARLINGTON- Billy Lee Matthews, son of Anita Matthews, died December 19, 2007. Funeral services were held Friday, December 21, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. in the Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home Chapel.
Mr. Matthews is survived by two sons, Buddy Kenneth and Greg McCaskill; two daughters, Red Gainey and Mary Gainey; and one sister, Lucinda Heath.

James Franklin Matthews
DARLINGTON- James Franklin Matthews, 80, widower of Mrs. Emily Munn Matthews, of Darlington died Thursday, December 21, 2005.
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 23, 2005 at 12 noon in the chapel of Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home officiated by Rev. Ted Windham. Burial followed at Darlington Memory Gardens.
Mr. Matthews was born in Williamsbury County. He was the son of the late John Calhoun Matthews and Janie Cribb Gainey. He was a veteran of the United States Army, World War II and was a retired mechanic. Mr. Matthews was a member of the Darlington Moose Lodge. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his friends at the Darlington County Courthouse.
Mr. Matthews was survived by one son, Barney Matthews of Darlington; three daughters, Hilda Louise (Jim) Davis of Columbia, Emily Brooks of Columbia, Alice ( John L. ) Pagett of Lexington; one brother; Frank Matthews of Andrews; one sister, Victoria Player of Andrews;12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

Frances Lunn Odom
DARLINGTON- Mrs. Frances Lunn Odom, a resident of the Swift Creek Community of Darlington County, died Sunday, December 23, 2007.
Funeral services were held Thursday, December 27, 2007 at 2 p.m. in Swift Creek Baptist Church directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Odom was born in Darlington County. She was the daughter of the late William Dossie and Laura McInville Lunn. She was a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church and was a dispatcher for Darlington County for many years.
Mrs. Odom is predeceased by her daughter, Patricia Lucinda Odom; her brother William Dorsey Lunn, Jr.; and her son in law James Carol Davis.
Survivors include two sons, William Frederick “Freddie” (Terry) Chapman and Larry Cephas (Kay) Odom; three daughters, Laura Ann Odom (Richard) Cowick, Mary Odom Davis, Carol Ruth Odom (Rex) Sigmon; her grandchildren, Cindy, Danny, Ryan, Kevin, Eric, Jimmy, Nicky, Tamra, Justin, Kari, Sarah, Heather, Charles, and sixteen great-grandchildren.
Due to the Christmas holiday the family received friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 26, 2007 at the funeral home and at all other times at Mrs. Odom’s home, 1617 Victory Lane, near Hartsville.

Virginia Hyatt Goude
WINSTON-SALEM, NC– Virginia Hyatt Goude, 69, of Winston Salem, NC, died at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007, surrounded by her family after a brave battle with Alzheimer's disease and cancer.
Virginia was born Jan. 16, 1938, in Cumberland County, NC. She was the oldest of six children of Wesley and Ella Lacy Hyatt. She was a graduate of Bennettsville High School and Draughn's Business College and worked as a legal secretary, court stenographer, and interior decorator prior to her illness. She lived and raised her family in Cheraw and Hartsville.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, William Henry Goude; parents Wesley and Ella Lacey Hyatt; her brother, Herman Hyatt; and her sister, Mildred Vincent.
She is survived by three loving daughters, Lauren Sawyer (Glenn) of Mount Pleasant, Ruth Flynn (Jim) of Lewisville, N.C., and Ann Prescott (George), of Newburgh, Ind., and her pride and joys - eight wonderful grandchildren, Patrick, Johnathan, Catherine and Porter Flynn, Bailey and Blake Prescott and Meredith and Scott Sawyer. She also is survived by three sisters, Bobbie Mendenhall, of Midway N.C., Shirley Flippin, of Martinsville, Virginia and Kay Blackmon, of Darlington; many loving nieces and nephews; and her dear friend Cora Harper of Winston-Salem.
The family wishes to express its sincere thanks to "her girls" at Alterra/Clare Bridge Memory Center of Winston-Salem (Thank you for the love and caring you showed our mother over the past year). Also, a very special thanks to the wonderful staff at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, especially to Leslie, Craig, Judy, Edith, Lydia and Shelia (We couldn't have made it without you). A special, special thanks to her "Sunshine" Cora Harper, who was heaven sent (We love you more).
